SPRING FOCUS 2023

SYRIA AND TURKEY

SYRIA AND TURKEY

SITUATION OVERVIEW

In the early hours of 6 February 2023, the first of
a series of earthquakes struck southern Turkey
and the north-west of Syria leaving in its wake
over 56,000 deaths and untold destruction and
devastation, making this one of the deadliest natural disasters of the century.

In total, more than 850,000 children have been forced from their homes, living with limited or no access to basic services, including water, sanitation, or social protection.

Compounding the tragedy, many of these children were already refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria.

In addition to the material deprivations they're suffering and the sadly attendant risk of trafficking, child labor, and child marriage, many of these children remain at risk of developing anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

OUR CALL TO ACTION

UNICEF has teams on the ground across the region working to support these vulnerable children and their families. Efforts include providing temporary shelter, food and medical aid, schooling, psychosocial support, and direct cash assistance to affected families.

As of May, 2023, UNICEF's Immediate Response Plan in Syria remains just 45% funded while in Turkey the number is 56%.

Our goal is to raise $50,000 in support of this vital and urgent work.
